Health Education/Public Health Personal Philosophy
Personal Philosophy

Health is described as the state of how a person feels. Additionally, health defines the state of a person’s physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being with the freedom of pain or disease. Environmental and financial are specific dimensions that could influence or impact the state of humans health. Three factors that influence the aspects of health are individual, relationship, and community levels. Individual factor describes a person’s lifestyle along with their age and sex. An example of relationships is social networks and community engagement with others that could positively impact their health. The community-level examples that could influence health in a good or bad manner are levels of education, work environment, living, and working conditions. Health can be measured in multiple ways. Physical health can be impacted by the amount of exercise you put into your daily life along with how you sustain yourself in healthy and nutritious ways. Moreover, emotional and mental health can be measured by having a social life that allows people to express themselves. Psychologists could be involved to help with mental health. Social well-being can be measured by the ability to do something as desired by becoming sociable in the community. An example of social health can include marital satisfaction.

Health education helps to provide information to help the community implement better decisions onto their lifestyles. Health education will assist in helping to reduce any risks of developing any specific illness or diseases that could negatively impact a person’s life. Health education helps to include strategies that help persuade a behavior change and allow to comprehend new skills to integrate for better health decisions. Education on health is intended for all individuals including from new-born to the elderly. This education is a process that changes over time as it allows a person to begin making changes step by step.

Becoming a health educator or, in other words, a health professional is considered important because it will allow me to educate minorities, people who live in poverty, and those who lack professional education on health. As a health educator, it will grant the opportunity to help people maintain a healthy physical lifestyle along with their emotional and mental health and incorporate better decisions onto their lives that could positively impact them. My career path as a health educator allows me to learn different things that influence and affect each individual health. My interest in helping others by sharing my knowledge and educating them will allow me to improve some aspects of their life. The population that I would like to target is American American women who have a high mortality rate. Additionally, this topic will be addressed to mothers in the college and the workplace who experience a high level of discrimination and racism that could significantly affect their mental health resulting in infant mortality.

Professional Statement

Hello! I'm Gissell

I became interested in Health Education since I grew up in hospitals and visited my medical providers for monthly checkups. At age six, I was diagnosed with Leukemia, Cancer, and then at age thirteen, I had my thyroid removed due to cancer. Attending medical visits made me realize how interested I was in working in Health Education to help other patients and people in my community the same way I was helped. I realized that Health Education was the right career path because I enjoy educating others and helping them with their needs. Studying health education requires to have patience, dedication, and demonstrating care for others which is a skill that I own. The goals that I have set as a community health educator for the next five years will be to take the Certified Health Education Specialist exam (CHES) and gain experience in a clinical setting by educating unprivileged patients who do not have the resources needed to change their health behavior for better. After gaining hands-on experience and being certified, I want to return to Cal State University of Long Beach (CSULB) for my master's in Public Health, Community Health Education. For patients to feel satisfied and supported, I want to provide them with all the resources needed through educational workshops, my knowledge of applying education, and developing strategies to help them implement the necessary steps to make positive changes in their behavior toward health.
